Re: where are all the beginners?

Stepping out of the beginner event discussion, the issue is really one of exposure.

I think a perfect place to fly would be at the end of Navy Pier in Chicago in the old Grand Ballroom. http://www.navypier.com/events/event_space/venues.html

People come in there all the time to see the space because it is glorious. If one could arrange a weekly/bi-weekly/monthly flying session there, with the foot traffic alone you would get tons of spectators. While you do need someone who is outgoing enough to answer questions, the models are their own ambassadors.

I will quote something I heard at the UNIDome last week: "That is the coolest hobby I have ever seen."

If we could snag a spot like that AND work to capitalize on the exposure, we'd have a healthy group of beginners.
I'd love to pursue the Grand Ballroom, but I am not sure that the indoor crowd I know would make the trek down there. And without some bit of critical mass (whatever that number might be), you'd kind of look like a crank.

I plan to get more involved in the somewhat local Bong Eagles, mostly to volunteer to be a site scout. Also because I am too lazy to form my own more local club. Maybe we can find an alternative site that does not involve $20 parking fees and crazy traffic, yet would get us some foot traffic and potential new members. Exposure, get them hooked and involved. The rest will all follow.

FWIW, I agree with both positions on motor stick bracing. It will make it both easier and more difficult...

Regards.
