Urbana, IL Armory update

I just got back from Urbana.

I just up one trim flight, then three test flights.
The first two had a large 42-48" fan going in the center of the armory. When the last runners/walkers cleared out, I turned it off and put up one more.

Conditions inside:
Near the ceiling, it was occasionally turbulent. Drift was pretty minimal, seemed about the same as ETSU Mini-dome (Although the MD has a pretty severe drift right as the top towards the speaker stack.) I didn't find such drift today.

Conditions outside started at ~72 and rose to ~80 degrees. Wind was less than 10mph estimated. Inside was like a sauna, very humid and felt like high 80's to low 90's. Suffice it to say I need a shower.

Flights were 14:04, 12:30, and 15:34. The last flight touched a few girders and flew over one on one circuit.

Talking to the guy who mans the desk, during the summer there are a few folks who come in only in the morning, otherwise it is normally empty for hours on Saturdays. He mentioned that he flew Science Olympiad a few years back, thought the F1D was pretty cool.

My sense is that if you were willing to take the risk of flying there with runners, they have no problems with sharing the space with models. Several of the walkers stopped by to talk, intrigued by what I was doing.

Given what I saw today, I will pursue a one day rental for a contest hopefully either late September or early October. If anyone is up for a roadtrip to down there some weekend, please send me a message. I'll see if I can arrange something again.

I did see a few helicopters hung up in the beams near the top, no doubt from the Science Olympiad trials earlier this year.

I will post some photos and video a bit later. Must shower first.

Regards.
