My 15 watt soldering pencil also wants to burn rather than cleanly melt film (depending upon how fast you move it.) So I use burn/melt method only to remove outline out from covering frame, then use new .004" razor blade for closer cutting to outline. As Ray, I carry the cautery for field repairs. Haven't touched it for a few years.
