If you want to use tape, I would use Gaffers Tape, it is the best you can
find. Stays put, won't tear, and is durable and light. It is even designed
to not leave a residue, and removes easily so you could replace the hinge.

I would be interested to see someone build a carbon fiber and foam core
laminate travel box. I have always thought that solid wood boxes are the
best, but they are much heavier than the foam ones.
