Frames for mylar covering

Contrary to 'old-school' conservation, balsa frames whipped together from two pairs of balsa strip wood--with CA glue and Kicker to speed the process--work better than those fancy rigs with screws and hardwood frames. Just slop on the lip balm, drop onto the film, cut, shake, stretch, and cover. Mine are bigger than 1/4" square, 4# to 8#, and stripped from sheet stock.

You can reuse the frames on another project but the problem is using a frame bigger than necessary. Other advantages of flexible balsa frames are: They can be adjusted for differing mylar tension across the frame using strip balsa and pins. They are light enough to not worry about destroying model parts when dropping the frame. Frames can be sized to what is needed; and, laid out on the film to best conserve material.

To those builders with fancy frames, I have a couple, too ... Somewhere.

Good building and flying,
