I had this problem, too. I tried to hold the "o" ring under the plate, but ended up tearing off the prop hanger.
The bottom plate of my current shield is about an inch or so shorter, leaving room to hold the "o" ring. I figure that my fingers are protecting that area of the motor stick. The side shield still runs out to the prop area.
