The blast plate idea developed during the long car journey back from the CargoLifter hangar in 2002. Ron Green, Geoffrey Lefever and I shared the car trip to Germany and Ron came up with the basic principle after we'd spent much of the weekend walking a hundred yards from our tables out to the launch area. The previous year, there were a lot of exploding motors (and swearing!).
