I don't doubt that WD40 works as you describe, but when used as a cleaner, there is not necessarily a "protective film" left behind. I just did an experiment. Sprayed a 4" X 6" plastic bag all over with WD40 until it dripped off. Waited a few seconds, then wiped plastic with paper towel. Weight of plastic before spray: 1.972 gram. Weight of plastic after wiping: 1.981 g. Weight of plastic 5 minutes after wiping: 1.972 gram, same as before spray. I'm sure its behavior on metal is a bit different, but this correlates with my experiences that WD40 just disappears eventually.
