Prior to IS, it was Paper Stick. Shellac was sold commercially despite its avordupoix.
Jim Richmond used saliva on his record Paper Tiger.
Even w/o Digital milligram scale, simple experiments can sort wheat from chaff.
With some 6" sticks & 1/4 X 2 paper, balance stick w/paper lengthwise on one end.
Add cement & measure change in balance point.
Can also do differential w/paper on each end but different cements.
Also easy to pull paper to check adhesion.
