For general building, where you use pins, go to a lumber yard and see
if they have a 4' x 8' sheet of either "Homasote Fiberboard", a brand
name, or "Bulletin Board Material". It's cheap, and is flat enough to
tack a set of plans to, and pin forever. Usually a work bench is 2 or
so feet wide, so you can cut the sheet in half (actually you can score
it like drywall), and have enough spare material to replace it as it
gets too unsightly. I've used it for just about all my modeling
career...over 50 years.
