And the reason is twofold. First of all, the lightest mylar films are only
about 20% heavier than the microfilm; for a weight-limited class it is
possible to make a model strong enough to meet the minimum weight and be
covered in plastic. And second, the plastic is much more stable, easy to
use and persistant for ageing, while microfilm tends to shring through its
life, warping models and eventually tearing by itself. Thus
plastic-covered models live much longer.
