What about the omega-shaped steel wire rings, that Gary suggested? Of
course their radius against the rubber is smaller than in plastic rings,
but then again, the cut edge of the plastic ring is also rather sharp, and
does not seem to harm the rubber.

Alas, in F1M in USIC 2004 I used wire spacers, with diamond hooks on both
ends, and about 2cm long, as replacement for o-rings. Worked fine, easy to
load and unload the rubber, and I counted their weight to the model
weight. But then, there is room in the weight for F1M, for D one would
need to use smaller spacers to reach the minimum weight.
