As for whipping out a telescoping rod to extend it, be careful with
this. Not only is it possible to take out a lot of things (people,
models, etc.) with the rod as it extends, but it is extremely easy to
use enough force that the last couple of sections will get stuck
really tight. Sometimes it is so difficult that you can't collapse the
pole easily.

Some of the poles on ebay look like great deals. I'm currently eyeing
a 12.5m rod...
