Styrofoam makes good protective cases. I've used a box out of 25mm (1 in)
blue foam around my F1B case for several years while flying. It has taken
quite a few dints, but the box inside and the models have survived. Does
not weight too much, just around 2kg with corners taped in silver tape. It
makes the box quite a lot bigger, though.
