Tiplets in F1M / F1D

The fashion is "smaller" planes like LRS and SciOly seems to be towards
flat wings with vertical winglets acting also as dihedral. I recall seeing
even one F1M with such wing, but no F1D's yet.

What is the theory/practise behind such wing tips, and will this be the
fashion of tomorrow also in F1D?
