While I generally agree with Aki on this, there is one point he did not
mention. Based on the way the grains are oriented on the log C grain tends
to have the most variation (density, cell structure, etc) and A grain tends
to be the most consistent. If you look at a photo/drawing of how the grains
are oriented to the trunk it becomes obvious. C grain is oriented across
with the rings going from one edge to the other so that any changes in
growing conditions causes variations in the wood. A grain is oriented
tangent to the growth rings so that the sheet contains wood that tends to be
more consistent as it all grew under similar conditions.
