Just to clarify, Bill Atwood and (I believe) Bruce Paton tried dual motors which turned in opposite directions and were connected to gears at the front end. The idea was that the smaller cross section motors would take more turns If you think about it a bit, there is no more energy being stored so the net result was whatever energy being lost to friction in the gear trains was not recoverable. I didn't attempt to argue and the idea died an natural death in a couple of years.
