I think the kits are a good thing in that they draw kids in with something that is buildable without experienced mentoring. Most seem to have reasonable ideas of how to repair when they break, although I have a number of customers buying additional kits because their old ones broke. Sometimes it's justified...kids are really good at breaking gliders.

My real goal is to offer a range of kits that draw SO and TSA students into AMA classes. So far none of them have bought my A-6 kits, but several are pursuing AMA competition, and that's the goal anyway.

One of the big holes right now is the lack of available kits for AMA classes. Most of the newcomers I've seen since I got into indoor flying have started on kits like those from IMS. IMS is gone, so now newcomers come to me asking "so where can I buy a kit to get started?" The notion that telling them how to build from scratch is a viable strategy is born out in how few follow up on that. Telling those interested in FAC flying that there's x kit they can buy has a much higher success rate.
