Alan,

  Good to hear from you. Don't know if you've been following the goings on but basically I've condensed my flying into two categories: those that fly under 20 mph, and those that fly over 150mph. Fun times. I'm actually considering trying a pulse jet at some point but have a couple rocketry goals to get out of the way first.
 

  Your "problem statement" resembles a video sent to me a while back by a frustrated student. Fun times. It really is the ultimate black art of aviation. I think even supersonic flight is less of a voodoo activity. Even as nice is my gliders look in flight, I take one look at Bill Gowen's, Kurt's, or any number of other fliers' planes and realize that there's a whole other level of flight performance that is light years ahead of what I'm doing.
