Re: Tying F1D motors

For weight-limited events, I have found the easiest method is to use a pair of hemostats to hold the rubber when tying knots. You first cut the motor (length) to the allowed weight and add a couple of O rings. Then fold the motor over and bring the ends together. Clamp them with the hemostats so as you start to clamp, no rubber extends past the jaws. Clamp tightly. A little rubber may squeeze past the jaws, but no problem.
I tie a loose overhand knot, wet the rubber well and pull the knot up tight against the jaws by spreading the two strands. I do that one more time. Having the motor at the correct weight before tying makes the job very simple.
This is not the lightest knot, but works well. Years ago, we used thread to bind the strands, along with some super glue. I don't know what people do these days for F1D, where every milligram of useful rubber is cherished.
