I've never done microfilm but am unsurprised that it seems to help.
Probably other dishwashing or other detergents would also work but might
offer little advantage. Dawn, Joy, and similar products were used to
clean up oil-soaked waterfowl; but "surfactants" were used on some oil
spills. The name used made a large difference in acceptability.

A common place to pour microfilm once was a bathtub. Maybe you are the
first person to knowingly and intentionally add a surfactant and reduce
the variability. <Grin and Congratulations>
