There are laser range finders that are much more accurate than the ones (golf type) we use to measure our model heights. I have a Hilti PD42 (made by Leitz) that is good to 0.01 foot at 600 feet (1mm at 200m for those metrically inclined). I assume Dima is speaking about a similar instrument. My calibration certificate for the device is dated back in 2010 though.

Like we can now do for stopwatches, I suspect we can self certify against a known distance.
