Rather than respond to several comments to the effect that 5/99 isnt necessary to compete at the highest level, I will just point out how its being treated by the OP and the very fact that it is in such demand and horded by those who have it. If it were merely one of many good rubbers, it would not be worth 6x current rubber(as posted by the OP) and there would be no reason to dole it out to "qualified" fliers.

 It would be believable that several other equally good options exist IF we saw as many people winning and setting records as those using 5/99 with other rubber. It may not be the only good rubber but its clearly the rubber of choice, and figuring out and finding alternatives is a hobby in itself.

As to balsa, we all know Greenman has the best there is, but that not the same as the best there ever was, just like 5/99 some people have been around long enough and dealt with enough people to have wood of a quality Greenman can not get. To me this situation is not as big a detriment to new people entering the sport because we have minimum weight and AFAIK, using ballast to get to that weight is not a large advantage.
