It is a great little intro model, Leo. That is all I flew this year at West Baden with Raymond and I had a blast with it.

The F1D Jr. was originally designed for some local high school students to have a model to use to qualify for the F1D team trials.  The first models were built entirely from balsa bought at the local Hobby Lobby store.  The local girls only had experience building Science Olympiad helicopters and towers.  It took the girls three sessions of two and a half hours each to build their models.  The models can fly well over 13 minutes in a Cat III site (using Tan SS rubber), about half the time of the best F1D at the same site.  I suspect a very experienced flier would get over 15 minutes at West Baden.  In addition, the model is very sturdy and easy to handle due to it's smaller wing area (similar to that of an LPP) and solid, braced motor stick.  One advantage over some other similar sized models is that there are no rules that limit the performance other than wing area, model weight, and motor weight so that materials other than balsa can be used along with any bracing needed.
So, we already have a legal F1D that meets Don Weigt's requirements. As John and others have mentioned, there are other ways to get into the Indoor sport.  Any should provide a good start.
