Re: Jury Statement on Purchased VP Hubs and ESTA reminder for the 2018 Indoor WC
For the future, why not just redefine the BOM rules to exclude VP hubs?
I think one of the biggest arguments and concerns is that allowing bought VP hubs will be a slippery slope to eliminate the BOM rules entirely, but we don't see people manufacturing "sell-able" models yet. Of course people could manufacture and sell models, but even then the cost would be very expensive, and in order to improve designs you would have to build new planes anyway. VP hubs are the only practical part to mass produce, so the current BOM issue concerns that particular part. A BOM rule excluding VP hubs still solves the issues of model trading and selling models, while allowing flyers to use the VP hub they choose.
Another thing to consider is a purchased VP hub is similar to a starting set of F1D plans. You build your first models from established plans because you know the kinks have been worked out, giving you time to learn how to fly. Similarly, purchased hubs have the kinks worked out allowing you to focus on learning how to use the VP. If you use a good, well established model design, you may have an advantage over your competitor who doesn't, but it isn't YOUR design. Is that unfair?
