FWIW, I didn't come up with this idea. I think I first saw it when LeoP had his set up.
I'm pretty sure he got it from someone else.

This method is better than sitting on top of the meter, but in any sort of breeze it suffers from similar issues with fluctuating weights. Given the distance from the scale though, I suspect static charge would not be an issue.
