About 10 or 15 years ago I bought a distance/height measuring meter that uses the ultrasonic rangefinder part from one of the old Polaroid instant print cameras. It’s proven to be quite accurate and cost considerably less than $175. Unfortunately I don’t recall what the price was, or whom he manufacturer was. I do see a bunch of ultrasonic measuring devices on the net, some dirt cheap. The only drawback to these devices is perhaps their limited range, maybe 50 feet or so, compared to laser devices.
