Re: F1D Junior Model

I read with some interest the comments, on this forum and others and through private email, on my post for the F1D Junior model. I would like to repeat and expand on three points from my original post.

1.) This is not a new class. The plane and the plans are for an F1D class plane. The plane is just not designed and built to the full dimensional and technical limits of the rules.

2.) I designed this plane for the young people who I mentor. Thus, they get the necessary instruction and help needed to progress in all the indoor skills, including building, set up, and flying. This is my way of introducing these young people (and some not so young people, too) to higher performance models. Of course, there are other ways to do the same things. BTW, I mentioned the use of boron as an option as boron techniques are important to learn. The plane can built and flown well with no boron (my personal plane and those of the local girls, as yet, have no boron).

3.) I seldom publish plans for the planes I design. A few people, after seeing my personal F1D Jr. model, asked for the plans and I did give out the outline plans as well as a bill of materials and any notes that I wrote up for the young people I mentor. This led to people asking if they could fly the model in the F1D only Jim Richmond Open contest the weekend before the 2018 Indoor World Championship at West Baden. With further thought, the organizers came to the conclusion the such a "simplified" F1D would allow many others to be able to fly in the JRO. The Spring West Baden contest has always been open to all model classes but this year, the contest is F1D only. The intent of promoting the F1D Jr type design is to have a plane that those who usually attend the Spring West Baden contest, those who will come as timekeepers, and any others who will attend to honor Jim can build in the next four months. The design provides a quick, easy, and inexpensive path to take part in the JRO. This is, by far, the main reason for publishing the plans.

I hope to see everyone at the JRO next March. Jim Richmond is a great flier and a nice guy, too. He will, even at 90 years of age, out fly us all next March

 Good air to all, LeoP
