I like the F1D Junior Model kit, but to make it really effective we should really push to conveying info in more modern resources like Youtube similar to what Joshua Finn has done. I understand that there are myriads of articles and other info out there to help, but videos can tell a whole lot more without using many words. Also, many articles assume the potential modeler know things like how to get the wood, how to cut it, what type of super glue to use, how much glue to use, etc. When I first started, Larry Coslick sent me a kit including a list of things I need to get from the store, and an instructional video he made of how to build an F1L. This was very effective I thought. I will try to find the video because it was really good. Ultimately what I think is that the model itself may be fine, but the resources tailored to helping newcomers get involved like videos, lists, etc are more important. Otherwise, the Junior F1D will simply be another airplane design.
Say instead of airplanes we were building a house. An F1D, would be a large beautiful, expensive house, and a penny plane is a smaller house. Of course the smaller house will be easier to build and take less experience, but if you are someone who has never built a house or knows nothing of what that entails, the different blueprints really don't matter. You still need to know how to pour the foundation, where to get the lumber, what type of lumber to use, etc. You are still building a house either way. This applies to indoor free flight. The P-18, X-16, LPP, F1D, etc are like different blueprints, you are still building and flying a plane, and need to know how to build and fly a plane before ever beginning construction.
Just some thoughts. What do you all think?
