The Nikon 40i is still better than any other brand's similar slope adjusted rangefinder and is the best bang for the buck in my opinion. However, the 80i, at about $200 more, is even better. The optics and electronics have been further optimized on the 80i. This allows the 80i to more consistently pick out the plane from the ceiling when flying within a yard of the ceiling at high sites (Kibbie for example). That said, I do not plan to get an 80i any time soon as my pre-40i CoolShot AS works good enough for me.
BTW, the best deals on the 40i usually come after the golf season is over (up north, that is) or just before the golf season starts.
