I find using a soldering iron as overkill. You burn away a lot more film and the fumes are pretty bad.
Personal preference, would rather breathe as little of that as possible.

I am finding boards that can adjust voltage down to 1.2V, can handle 1.5A continuous and are inexpensive.
I think I will order one to try out.
