Read Feynman's autobiography "THAT'S WHAT YOU SAY MR FEYNMAN" (close but possibly somewhat wrong)
for an account of how he accomplished that.
The book is a good read. Feynman was extremely intelligent and also very human.

I believe that he worked out the problem with the "O" rings on the shuttle boaster rocket motors that caused the explosion of the shuttle in the middle 80's, demonstrating before the commission formed to find out why the shuttle exploded. He used iced water and dropped a piece of the "O" ring into the water and demonstrated the failure by breaking the piece of rubber, . . .if you already know this, never mind.
