I'd still like a rationale for a number versus a name.

I have to think that there is a reason for this, i.e. two competitors shared the same model.

Having the name on it would make it obvious that Mike Kirda is walking out with Mike Kirda's model rather than another team member's model. A number should NOT be obvious.
