I believe that one A6 was made with a VP mechanism - I recall seeing it but cannot recall where or whom.
It didn't win, IIRC, I have never seen it since. VP mechanisms are not a factor in A6 competition at this time.

I have also never seen a biplane. I cannot imagine it would be competitive due to being so overweight and being limited to 30 square inches total for the wing.
I don't think two 15 square inch wings would be competitive over a single 30 square inch monoplane.

Tandems certainly do well, but Tom Sova's last A6 wasn't a tandem IIRC and it was pretty competitive.

Trim plus rubber and prop matching will continue to be the most important factors in A6.
You certainly don't need a tandem to win.
