I flew our 2010 Wright Stuff model today in a gym with pretty good air. I tried for 3 hours, but I could not top our competition times from 2010. In 2010, we flew 3:20 twice from 25'. The best I did today was from 3:14 from 25'. The model has a great cruise and descent, and it flew beautifully. Oh, and I did not even trim the model -- I flew it right out of the box, exactly as it was trimmed 6 years ago. We did a great job trimming 6 years ago!
By the way, 3:20 from 25' was a very competitive time back in 2010. Nationally, perhaps only Leo had a plane that could do substantially better.
I believe I can make some improvements to the prop. We had sanded the Ikara prop blades to the point of losing some camber and twist. If I have time, I'll make a new prop using Bill Gowen's famed flaring carbon hub and refrain from sanding the blade.
I had expected that I could gain some performance by winding better. I know rubber much better today than I did in 2010. However, little did we know at the time, we were already winding really well.
This experience affirms my belief that if you can master a Wright Stuff model, or a P-18, you are already an incredibly good indoor flier.
