Re: Idea for a New Event

You are probably referring to my post, Chris.

The intent of that post was to try to identify clubs within about an 8 hour drive of Rantoul.
I was trying to make sure that we could find enough sponsors for the site.
In the end I got less responses than I expected there, but we ended up with enough to move ahead anyway.

As others have identified, this is a multi-faceted problem.
Until we identify the demographic we are interested in and start doing research, we won't really know the answers as to why 'they' don't flock to our hobby.
There is the problem of 'lack of flying sites' and 'lack of mentors'. Also just the complete lack of press we get - No one knows we exist.

There are several hundred people on this group. We can't all be engineers and/or IT Directors: There must be someone who does or did marketing research. We can easily create surveys to capture data and have it be completely anonymous.
We can identify potential flying sites. We can develop contacts within those sites. And we can pull enough of us together to help out/mentor new flyers. We will still need the equivalent of the Walmart greeter at the flying sites to help guide people - That's a personality thing that not everyone has.

A lot of this is still cart/horse though. If I could identify a new site, how many would come? That is a real concern. Like it or not, most sites cost money nowadays and without a club to help defray the costs, you are dead in the water. Look at the site Evan re-discovered. It would be awesome, except for that multi-thousand dollar rental fee. And yes, Ron, I hear you about corporation sponsorship, so we should add that to our list of needed skills.

What other skills do we need and how can we move forward?
I'm all ears.

Regards.
