At the risk of appearing to foist crass commercialism on indoor modelers, I'm announcing that I think I have solved the razor blade problem. Long gone are those great Star blades that broke so cleanly and were stiff enough to hold the line and not follow the grain. Well, I have found blades of the same thickness that break just the same way, sharp and straight.
I'll try to put a couple of photos of broken edges to compare. There are a lot of Chinese blades out there that claim to be carbon steel, but when they are broken, the point practically goes around a corner. As far as I can see, the only available real carbon blades are Feather, which are only .004" thick. Mine are Candidius blades were .003" thick. Mine are 3.4 and eight times stiffer, respectively.
When held in a blade block and use on the balsa stripper, these blades will stay sharp for a very long time. Decades ago, one modeler swore he cut six miles with one point. Must have been hallucinating.
Find the blades on my website on the balsa stripper page.
