I like the idea. You are basically suggesting replacing the 7.5" or so of the rolled motor tube with a solid piece of balsa. What cross section and density of balsa do you think would be adequate?
If we use a cross section of .125 x .25->.20", 4#, the gain in weight is 100 mg over the same in a rolled tube+boron. I would still use bracing to keep this part as light as possible. 100 mg would be a very good trade off for a fixed-pitch model.
I agree that the most difficult part to build is the motor stick, not building the tube, per se, but installing webs and posts.
