I think part of it is having relatively even tension throughout. This is in part possible because the spreading process won't allow more than a certain amount of tension before the film starts sliding on the board. When the frame/film is lowered onto the flying surface, the ribs deform a little to conform, so the tension is controlled that way.
Using a sharp pointed soldering iron and cutting from directly over the film is critical. Any other orientation, or a larger tip, causes the film to heat shrink, and then you really do get potato chips!
