Yep. Same experience with the Dremel. Boatloads of runout with no effective way to “tram” the machine. The crappy chuck doesn’t help. I’m using a spring loaded Albrecht micro-chuck that closes to a “true zero” attached to a ½” straight shank that is in turn held in the R8 collets used in both my small Chinese and larger Rockwell 21-100 mills. In each case, before use, I tram the machine using the far ends of the “X” axis as my datum points. The spring loaded chuck allows me to manually pull a tiny drill down to the work, and the second I hear or to some degree “feel” something wonky, to instantly remove pressure from the drill. The other issue I found is that many of the smaller drills sold in “hobbyist” sets are less than accurate, and have quite a bit of built-in runout. For me, this has meant shopping for tiny drills at real-guy machinist’s/industrial supply houses (McMaster Carr, Enco, et al). More expensive, for sure, but if you only need a few sizes for VP hubs, probably still cost effective.
Not throwing rocks at the Dremel! The workstation sits atop my bench, and has been used on countless “big” projects (drilling prop blanks for peanuts through dimers, drilling out foam/balsa wheel bushings; turning spinners, and wheels, etc.
That said, I lust after Mike’s Dumor, but if I buy one more machine tool, I fear my domestic tranquility will suffer harm.
