Wouldn't you think that the full-width carbon spars would not give
enough rigidity in the flight direction? Agreed the spar configuration
is not optimal in that direction, but maybe would give some strength
though.

I would construct spars with vertical webbing by making a sheet and then
cutting the individual spars with circular saw. First laminate the
oversized balsa to one sheet of carbon, and once cured, sand the balsa
to final dimension and add the other carbon layer.
