Hi Tim.

The reason is actually simpler:
Yahoo wants to make it more difficult for the bad guys to easily harvest your e-mail address(es) so they can sell them on to spammers. These groups used to be a prime way to harvest real live e-mail addresses.
No longer.

The pain is worth it in my opinion.
