Mike, what glue are you using for the seam? I used straight (yes, unthinned) duco for the seams, and my first 5-10 booms were made and used without boron until I started needing them to be stiffer, at which point I went back and boroned all of them at 6 and 12 O-clock. Many of those were made with the seam on the left side of the boom so that any warp would turn into left rudder, but I never had one deflect more than 1/2". I did tend to leave them on a piece of 1/16" carbon rod (remember, I don't have a legit taiboom form) for a day or two.
  
 As for thicker wood, yeah, I'll go for that. Most of my booms were made with wood that was a lot closer to 5-6 lb, so that is part of my reluctance to use thick wood.
