PET and mylar(melinex in the UK) are both synthesised from dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol to yield polyethylene terephthalate which is not soluble in acetone or MEK.
Are you sure you are not confusing the above with Polyester resin?
Try dissolving a few fibres of a polyester jacket (PET) in either of the above solvents!
