From a total outsider who once flew some, why is everyone hung up on Helium? Hydrogen has better lift and would surely be cheaper. It is flammable but it is trapped inside a balloon. If it leaks it would be a very small amount and easily contained with scotch tape if nothing else. Being a smaller molecule the gas would probably leak out over time but you could just add more.
