^ means raised to the X power. 2 squared is 2^2=4 2 cubed is 2^3=8

 * means "times". (I don't
 understand why an "x" wouldn't
 do.)/ means "divided by". (Again, why
 not a ÷ ?)
 but what does ^ mean?
