RE: F1D rule change

I am sorry to see how much the change in the F1D rules has upset many top flyers but I must admit that a quote from something learnt at school is what comes to my mind: ‘… the old order changeth yielding place to new and God fulfils himself in many ways lest one good custom should corrupt the world.’.

Many modellers, like me, do not have the talents to compete at International level but still have a keen interest in what goes on at the cutting edge. However the cutting edge needs a bit of honing now and again, in the form of rule changes, otherwise it becomes dull. Consider the outdoor Free Flight classes. Over the years towline lengths, motor runs and rubber weights have been reduced and yet performance has increased enormously due to improvements in structures, aerodynamics and flying.

I touched on this matter a few months ago when BOM was the subject and this particular rule change had not arrived. Then I said that rule changes were the opportunity to innovate and I stand by that. I am amazed that so many Americans seem defeatist when the US have been masters of Indoor flying since the earliest days. Also astonished to see my friend Mark Benns talking of giving up after changing HLG for ever with his ground-breaking tip launch model and making the English F1D team after the shortest of apprenticeships.

I am truly looking forward to seeing what evolves to ‘beat’ the new rules. Perhaps we should have a prize for the first flyer to top half an hour.

I have been informed that the new rules have been approved.... I spoke with most teams at the World Champs and can honestly say none agreed with the proposals!.. Personally I have to decide whether I want to scrap all my models and start again... My current feelings are to quit F1D... Why change a perfectly good set of rules?...
