I usually just use the brass end grommets that come with the guitar strings. The bare end I wrap around a grommet from a previously used string. It is necessary to wrap the wire in such a way that it does not slip loose when pulled. These grommets have about an .125" OD and a .078" ID. I usually use a nail to do the pulling but the largest wire I usually need to straighten is 0.016". For 0.020" wire, I buy K&S rods at the local hardware store.
