One thing about West Baden this year that seemed a bit different than last:
The air was a LOT more turbulent this year down low.
F1D partial motor testing was pretty much pointless. You couldn't get consistent flights with identical motors/turns/torque with no changes between them.
To me, it seemed like there was a layer about 60 feet up - Get to this and the air was pretty stable.
Below it there was a pattern - Turbulent air rising at the north end where the sun hits the carpet with thermals if you could catch them. Then a fairly quick ride from north to south. (Unless you punched past 60 feet quickly.) And a fairly severe downdraft in spots on the south end. Don had a cabin model that was cruising nicely and hit this downdraft - came 30 feet down in just a few seconds.
In the afternoon, this became less of an issue - by 3-4pm, the air was fantastic.
Honestly, I'd like to ask that they move the start to say 10am and extend the time in the evening to say 7pm. We'd have more time in better air, leading to better flight times IMO.
Regards.
