In 1972, I built a science demonstration built on this effect. It followed the example of a Scientific American article, and consisted of a 16 mm film reel festooned with rubber bands dipping into a trough of warm water. After a little start it would keep rotating as long as there was a temperature difference between the water and the air. Unlike a lot of things, rubber shrinks as it is warmed.
